Alexander the Great Essay
John Green thinks Alexandra was great because of two reasons. First, he was a great general. Second, he conquered a lot of lands (CrashCourse). His ability to strategize, dream, and plan on a large scale enabled him to win numerous battles when his enemies outnumbered him. Alexander won his first battle, the battle of Granicus in 334 BC. He also won the fight against Persia despite being opposed by the Spartans. In 333 B.C., he won the Battle of Issus. In the battle, Darius III led the Persians with a force of more than 600000 troops.Greatness is a question of accomplishments because history records the activities of great people. Alexander was good at fighting and destroying things, and this is how he became great. He killed many people and made others suffer, yet many historians are only concerned with his success in winning wars, and not with the negative impacts of his actions. There has been a problem with using the term Great to describe people historically because people tend to concentrate on unnecessary things like hairstyle to define great people. Many people also, associate greatness to men only while there are some women who are also great (HistoryExtra). According to me, greatness is the ability of people to impact those around them out of inspiration and passion and not for the sake of their self-interest. Based on this definition, people who help children from low-income families to access quality education, nutrition, and healthcare can be considered great because of the positive impacts of their actions on such families.
